Biography
Tom Chadwick was trained by the Scottish artist Iain Macnab at the famous Grosvenor School of Modern Art. Macnab always spoke of him as an outstanding artist-engraver and his most brilliant student. Tragically Tom Chadwick’s career was cut short by the Second World War – he was killed when fighting for the 3rd Hussars at the battle of El Alamein in 1942 at the age of only 27.
Due to his short life, Tom Chadwick produced only relatively few wood engravings and all of these are now extremely rare. Garrett observes that “because of the limited quantity of the total output there is a danger that Chadwick’s work could be lost. This would be deplorable in view of the brilliance of his work” (A History of Wood Engraving, London, 1978, p.246).
Few of Tom Chadwick’s editions were ever completed and most of his prints are so rare as to be almost unobtainable.
